Can anyone wear a body camera UK?

Yes. There are no specific laws covering the use of body-worn cameras. However it would be beneficially to read the Draft Update Surveillance Camera Code Of Practice which details 12 principals to follow regarding any surveillance.

Can I use a GoPro as a body camera?

Yes. You can use a GoPro as a body camera. Note that the wide angle, high definition recording will create large files. There are better, specifically design and more discreet options available

Can UK police film you without consent?

Yes. It is not a criminal offence for police officers to film members of the public without their consent. The Police must advise when they are starting to film. That being said the Police will still need to follow the principals as stated in the Draft Update Surveillance Camera Code Of Practice.

Do body cameras record continuously?

Yes and No. Yes they can and an example would be the Hytera VM780 which can record continuously for 8 hours at 1080p. No. Police will turn them on and off at their discretion.

Do bouncers wear body cams?

Yes. Bouncers wear body cams as a way to protect themselves and provide evidence that can be used in court, and they can help diffuse situations before they escalate.

How do I choose a body camera?

You should consider the cost, compatibility with your laptop/pc, does it have suitable features, what is the camera resolution, is it easy to wear, how heavy is it, is it durable, does it have IP rating for wet weather. Ultimately the device needs to be suitable for your specific application.

What are the data protection restrictions of a body worn camera?

Body Worn Cameras are compatible with GDPR regulations if, the footage is processed lawfully and fairly and transparently. The footage is recorded for specified and legitimate purposes. Footage must be stored securely. Footage should only be retained for the minimum amount of time required. Irrelevant Footage must be deleted. You must respond appropriately to data subject requests
